Chapter Meeting

Certification Director, Kelly Staller, will present details on how to get SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP certified for free in 2015 if you currently are HRCI certified.  She also will explain the SHRM Body of Competecy and Knowledge platform used for the new credentials and the process to get certified for the first time. You will also learn as an added bonus how to add an extra year between the 1st and 2nd credentialing period.  

This presentation will go through some relatively recent changes and developments in employment and labor law that have come through state and federal legislation and court decisions.  It will include do’s and don’ts for HR professionals relative to the changes.  This will also include some reflections on developing trends or stated directions taken by policy makers and enforcement.

North Star SHRM will be hosting a seminar titled: Walking The Talk – Managing Company Culture.  It will be held at the Minnesota School of Business (11500 193rd Avenue, Elk River) on Wednesday, June 10, 2015 from 8 am to 9:30 am. All North Star SHRM members are invited to attend.  In addition, all Elk River and I-94 West Chamber members, and Minnesota School of Business students are invited to attend.  There is no cost to attend.

North Star SHRM will be hosting a seminar titled: You’re a Supervisor, and You Did What?  It will be held at the Minnesota School of Business (11500 193^rd Avenue, Elk River) on Wednesday, May 13, 2015 from 8 am to 9:30 am.

Minnesota recently became the 23rd state to legalize medical marijuana.  Although the new law could improve opportunities for treatment of those suffering from certain conditions, it may create issues for employers and employees in "drug-free" workplaces.  This is due, in part, to the fact that marijuana is still an illegal controlled substance under federal law.

Attendees will learn what do do when an employee discloses a medical or mental health condition.  The presentation will begin with a brief refresher on the Family Medical Leave Act (“FMLA”) and Americans with disabilities Act (“ADA”), including eligibility requirements and legal entitlements.  It will then provide a “deep dive” into recent changes to the ADA, including what is a disability, what is not a disability, and what could potentially be a disability.
