Once called “toothless,” the National Labor Relations Board today is seeking to impose costly and burdensome penalties on employers accused of violating the National Labor Relations Act.  With union-organizing petitions at their highest level in years – and high-profile union-organizing successes at national employers catching the attention of a new generation of workers – it is important for all human-resources professionals to understand the impact and risks associated with union petitions and unfair -labor practice charges.

This class reviews the applicable law, explains the charges under way at the NLRB, and discusses best practices for human-resources professionals when assessing the potential and responding to the reality of union organization at their workplaces.

    Learning objectives:

    • Understand the structure and role of the National Labor Relations Board and applicability of National Labor Relations Act.
    • Understand current NLRB priorities having an impact on workplaces nationally
    • Discuss best practices for assessing and responding to organizing activity in workplaces

This seminar will be presented by Jack Sullivan, Employment Advisor and Litigator in Dorsey & Whitney’s Labor & Employment group.

Jack provides business leaders and human resource professionals with practical guidance through difficult compliance, managerial, and workforce decisions.  Jack also advises management on union and labor-law issues.  His advice to clients is informed and strengthened by his own professional experience as a manager, as he served as a newsroom leader and editor during his first career as a journalist – and so knows first-hand the challenges and rewards of effectively hiring, training, and managing employees.  Jack works to resolve potential problems and disputes on terms that work best for his clients so they can focus on the needs of their business – and when matters can’t be resolved, is a creative and effective litigator who has represented clients in state and federal courts and private arbitrations across the country.
