North Star SHRM will be hosting a seminar titled: Finance for the Non-Financial HR Person.  It will be held at Guardian Angels Senior Services Corporate Offices (508 Freeport Avenue NW, Elk River) on Wednesday, September 13, 2017 from 8 am to 9:30 am. All North Star SHRM members are invited to attend.  In addition, all Elk River, Monticello, and I-94 West Chamber members are invited to attend.  There is no cost to attend.

The target audience for this seminar is HR professionals and any small business owners.  This course will discuss the basics of accounting and how it relates to the cash flows of the firm.  It will then demonstrate how finance and accounting are inextricably linked and tied to how the market perceives value.  The concept of value is rooted in the idea that risk and return go “hand-in-hand”; the more risk you take, the greater the return you expect (but may not actually receive…thus risk.)  We will discuss the basics of value and how your finance staff looks at whether projects are “value added” or not.

     Key Learning Objectives:

    • Understanding of the key accounting statements and how they tie into cash flows that are used to value projects and companies.
    • Define and describe the key capital providers of a firm.
    • Understanding the inherent link between risk and return and how this affects value.
    • Calculating value of a simple project and understanding the concept of Net Present Value.

This seminar will be presented by Helen Moser.

Helen found a passion for finance during her 5 year stint with the U.S. Army.  Post-Army, she earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees in Finance.  She spent several years in the banking industry, working her way up from credit analyst to CFO.

She began teaching part-time during her career in banking and began teaching full-time in 2004.  She has been teaching at the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota for ten years, and is heavily involved in the MBA Program.  Her passion for finance, investing and real estate fuel her energy in class.
